Video Introduction#
The 20th century was the century of the Cold War, the century of confrontation between the socialist camp and the capitalist camp. In the 1960s, while the Beatles were at the height of their popularity outside the Iron Curtain, the short-lived spring in Czechoslovakia was crushed by the Soviet iron cavalry. The voice from outside the Iron Curtain reached Marta Kubišová in Prague, Czechoslovakia at that time, giving birth to the legend of the Czech pop music scene and also to her own life of suffering.
Until the late 1980s, when the Berlin Wall fell and Marta Kubišová's buried records saw the light of day again, the voice of the victims of the era had already been engraved on this century.
This film won the Excellence Award in the Documentary Division of the All Japan Association of Television Program Production Companies (ATP) and the NHK Broadcasting Culture Fund Award for its outstanding portrayal of the story of the Czech people's struggle for democracy, which was inspired by the popular songs of the Beatles.
This film was broadcast as part of the "Premium Cafe" series on NHK BS Premium in 2021. It was originally broadcast in the early 2000s on NHK BS-hi channel. The Premium Cafe series aims to collect NHK BS channel original films with the highest viewer demand. In addition to the documentary film originally broadcast in 2000, this version also includes a discussion segment with the host Ayumi Watanabe and musician Akira Miyakawa discussing the content of the original documentary. In the translation and production process, reference was also made to the version broadcast in 2009 on NHK BS2 channel's "BS20th Anniversary Selection HD Special" produced by the well-known NHK documentary translator kamonka. Sincere thanks to them.

Personal Opinion#
The film, which was broadcast in 2000, inevitably carries the limitations of its time. For example, issues of marriage and childbirth are now being questioned by feminism, and social movements can now be decentralized in this highly developed information age. However, Marta herself is still singing even now, and as the "conscience of Czechoslovakia," her influence on society cannot be overshadowed by the changes of the times. From a current perspective, Marta may be able to do more and be more thorough, but in that era, she was undoubtedly a pioneer and progressive. In addition, the film does not make the history it should tell very clear. For example, what did Marta say and do after joining the Charter 77? Or does the narrator Harris and Sen, as outsiders from a foreign country, have the suspicion of not positioning themselves correctly and thus misinterpreting Marta's own experiences?
